This is such a fun story about a queen whose feet just won’t behave. They never want to wear dignified shoes, and they won’t be still during important meetings. The final straw is when they kick the ankle of an obnoxious visiting monarch. Hard. An entertaining story with a satisfying ending!

If you read just one book from this letter Q book list, make it this one. This is a long book, but it’s an amazing story that both my preschoolers and I enjoy. It’s a story about a king who has everything money can buy; he has rooms filled to the ceiling with gifts from his subjects. But it’s never enough. Now he wants one of the breathtaking quilts sewn by the talented quiltmaker. But her quilts are not for sale; they are given only to the needy. The king threatens the woman’s life until he finally agrees to her terms: for every gift he gives away, she’ll sew a new patch on his quilt. This is an extraordinary story that you must see for yourself. I love, love, love this book!

This is a simple, gentle story about a little girl who knows just how things would be if she were queen of the world. I love how she always includes her little brother. (Even though she’d have a hundred lollipops a day and never have to share, she’d give him a lick or two.)

A little too cutesy for my taste, but my Two and almost-Four requested it many times.

At first glance, I wasn’t sure this we would enjoy this book – but it’s such a great story! Vain Queen Ruby loves to wear flowers in her hair. When these attract birds and bees, she banishes the creatures to the adjoining kingdom. But when spring comes again, there are no flowers. There are no bees to pollinate them and no birds to eat the harmful insects. The book has a wonderfully satisfying ending.

Today I read The Josefina Story Quilt with my 3.5-year-old. He loved it! He kept asking for specific chapters over and over (“the river,” “the robbers”). It’s about a girl on a wagon train west, with her pet chicken Josefina, who unexpectedly died in the last chapter. It was our first historical fiction (that I can remember.) He was sad and surprised that the hen died at the end. I guess it was bound to come up sometime in a book.
