Looking for letter E activities for preschool?
This week we did fewer activities than usual because we were fighting a pretty nasty bug. But we still packed in quite a bit of learning!
(Update: I published this post years ago when my children were young. Now that I have more time, I’ve created a done-for-you alphabet curriculum perfect for preschool!)
Letter E Activities
My son really loves my letter books of songs and rhymes. One time through is never enough!
For letters C and D we did mostly process art activities. This time I wanted to try some traditional crafts. While these may not have a lot of benefit for older preschoolers, they are a great learning experience for my Three.
Each craft was a puzzle of sorts – he had to figure out where to put the pieces. He did this one all on his own, as you can see ;). Learn more about this craft (and where we got our free pattern) in our round up of letter E crafts.
Not only did he have to figure out where to place the shapes, but he also got practice with a glue stick. He usually wants me to do all the gluing, but I got him to try it himself for this one. He decided that he wanted a sad Elmo! Learn more and find out where we got the free pattern.
Are you wondering what this has to do with letter E? Well, it doesn’t. It was actually a review activity of letters we’ve learned previously. I pulled out my ABC picture cards and helped my Three sort them by beginning sound.
“Let’s look at this picture. /c/, /c/, cat! We’ll put it under /c/, /c/, c. Now this one. /d/, /d/, dinosaur! It goes under /d/, /d/, d.”
By the end he was starting to be able to isolate the beginning sounds of words. Matching words that have the same beginning sound is something he’s still not ready for.
Of course, we love to read! We enjoyed reading books from our collection of letter E books. I was thrilled that my boys loved But No Elephants as much as I did when I was a kid. That’s definitely one to own!
For a sensory activity, I cut up some pictures of objects that begin with E and put them inside of Easter eggs. Then he dug for them in this bin of colored rice. He liked opening and closing the eggs (great for fine motor!), and running his hands through the rice.
Together, we worked at finding upper and lowercase e’s in my letter find page. This was a nice whole alphabet activity because we identified other letters that he knew as well.
